WHAT

The launch of a grassroots initiative to build community and support among first generation students and faculty who identify as coming from poverty or working class backgrounds. After this first gathering, monthly meetings will be held to further community and support students as they transition into and through university. Faculty members will play a key role as mentors to these students.

WHO

This initiative is by and for students from and/or living in poverty and students from working class backgrounds.

WHY

Canadian universities work towards being inclusive of minorities based on race, sexual orientation, disabilities, and gender, but a key diversity area is often left out of conversations: social class. This gathering will allow us to discuss not only the challenges and struggles we face but also and crucially the unique gifts and strengths we bring to the academic environment.

Part of this grassroots initiative is to (1) Increase retention and widening access to, and participation in, higher education for socioeconomically marginalized students and (2) To make visible these university members’ lived experiences to advance socioeconomic diversity at UVic.
